Ethanol is hygroscopic, which means it absorbs water vapor immediately from the environment. Because absorbed water dilutes the gasoline worth of the ethanol and will trigger part separation of ethanol-gasoline blends (which causes engine stall), containers of ethanol fuels must be kept tightly sealed. This excessive miscibility with water means that ethanol cannot be efficiently shipped through trendy pipelines, like liquid hydrocarbons, over long distances.
